New project: creating an efficient and approachable front of house facilities for Strand Palace Hotel

New project: creating an efficient and approachable front of house facilities for Strand Palace Hotel

Posted on the 22/09/2020 by Karndean Designflooring

When London & Regional Hotels appointed Trevillion Interiors to refurbish the iconic Strand Palace Hotel in central London, the brief was to create efficient and approachable front of house facilities with high quality guest rooms that would remain true to the hotel’s Art Deco heritage.

To meet the requirements of today’s business and leisure guests, the hotel owners were keen to integrate the original features of the historic building with a comfortable and welcoming interior that would guide guests seamlessly through the public spaces.

Taking a holistic approach, Trevillion designed a modern interpretation of Art Deco style Strand Palace Hotel that tells the story of the hotel’s history. In Haxells Restaurant & Bar, which offers British inspired cuisine with a passion for provenance, the theatrical location has been enhanced with a heritage colour palette, geometric patterns and contemporary design details.

Frances Blackham, design director at Trevillion Interiors, explained: “Research of the period provided an opportunity to look deep into the hotel’s history and beyond established Art Deco styling, enabling us to design a solution that has a true affinity with the building. We embraced these rich periodic influences typical of the era to create a scheme with a strong sense of style and sophistication.”

In a style true to the hotel’s 1920s heyday, Haxells Restaurant & Bar has a timeless elegance with a restrained colour scheme, perpendicular lines and glamorous feature lighting. A variety of seating, including intimate booths and bar stools, offers the look of a gentleman’s club.

The gentle palette of muted natural shades in the restaurant and bar is grounded with Glacier Oak flooring from the Art Select collection while mustard and teal highlights, bold artwork and elegant brass accents introduce characterful elements. Mirrors and concealed lighting have been added to enhance the limited natural light for a cosy, yet open feel.

With its authentic textures of traditional oak flooring, but with contemporary grey, beige and pink tones, the impressive long planks of Glacier Oak provide a contemporary interpretation of this classic flooring with all the practical benefits of luxury vinyl flooring such as hygiene and durability.

Adding a sense of interest and demarcating the bar activity zone, Trevillion Interiors opted to mix materials by introducing a three tone flooring design using Solus Ceramics. The alternating black, brown and white tiles run alongside the bar and can be easily created using a combination of designs such as Ebony, Classic Oak and White Washed Oak from the Van Gogh range.
